Despite its name, the Balaclava was not a form of steel helmet, but was in fact a knitted close-fitting hood that was worn over the head and neck with an open face.

The Balaclava was on cold nights by soldiers either on Guard duty, stuck in a trench, sniping or night operations. It could be worn under the helmet or rolled up as a cap.
