You know the costume-shop "army" outfit the second you see it — shiny synthetic fabric, a print that isn't quite right, reads as "costume" from ten feet away, and usually smells faintly of a warehouse. Genuine ex-issue kit solves that instantly, for the simple reason that it isn't trying to look military. It actually is military.
Why genuine beats costume-shop every time
Real ex-issue clothing has the right fabric weight, the right cut, real hardware, and often genuine wear that no costume department can fake convincingly. For a fraction more than a flimsy costume, you get something that actually holds up, fits properly, and looks completely authentic in photos — not to mention it's genuinely warm and comfortable for an outdoor event, which is more than can be said for most costumes by 11pm.

Building a convincing look
You don't need to spend a fortune or buy a full matched uniform to look right — a few genuine pieces layered together usually beats one "complete costume" outfit:
- Start with the jacket or tunic. This is what people notice first, so it's worth prioritising a genuine one over anywhere else.
- Add a real beret or cap with a badge. Headwear does a lot of work for recognisability — a genuine beret with the right badge instantly reads as authentic.
- Genuine badges and insignia finish the look. Small, inexpensive, and they add a huge amount of realism for very little cost.
- A stable belt or webbing pouch adds a finishing touch. These small details are exactly what a synthetic costume set never gets right, and they're inexpensive to add on.
- Don't worry about matching everything perfectly. Mixing genuine pieces from slightly different eras or even different branches (unless you need historical accuracy for a specific event) still reads as far more convincing than a synthetic costume set.
A genuine wool beret with a badge does more for a convincing look than almost anything else.
A quick note on legality
Wearing genuine military-style clothing for fancy dress and events is completely fine — UK law is specifically aimed at people trying to impersonate a serving member, not fancy dress or costume use. See our full guide on the legal side of wearing military surplus if you want the details (short version: nobody's going to arrest you for turning up to a party looking sharp).
The bottom line
For any event where you want to actually look the part — not just tick the "in costume" box — genuine surplus is worth the small extra cost over a synthetic costume-shop outfit. Two rules worth knowing before you buy anything
Neither of these will spoil your evening, and both will save you an awkward conversation.
Do not wear medals you did not earn. If you want the look, wear ribbons or leave the chest bare. Wearing another person's gallantry awards in a pub is the one thing that will genuinely upset people who served, and it is easily avoided.
Do not assemble something that reads as currently serving. A vintage or clearly historical impression is understood as costume. A current regiment's insignia on current-pattern combat clothing is a different thing entirely, and it is not worth the misunderstanding.
Where the effort actually pays off
Costume goes wrong in predictable places, and they are all cheap to fix:
- Footwear — trainers under military trousers undo everything above them. Plain black boots cost little and fix most of it.
- Fit — issued clothing was fitted properly. Something two sizes too big reads as costume from across the room.
- Headwear — a real beret shaped properly beats a novelty cap by a mile, and it is usually cheaper.
- Restraint — one good badge beats six. Real uniforms carry less insignia than people expect.
