Long before "add to basket" was a thing, Jungle was selling genuine British military surplus the old-fashioned way — in person, off a stall, to real customers who could hold the kit in their hands before they bought it. That was 1978. We're still doing the same job today, just with considerably fewer market-stall mornings in the rain.
Nearly 50 years in surplus
What started as a real-world trading operation has grown into a catalogue of thousands of genuine items, built on decades of relationships and knowledge in the surplus trade — not a business that started by researching military surplus online, but one that's been living it since 1978. Trading face-to-face for that long teaches you things a spec sheet never will: how to spot genuine issue from a copy at a glance, which regiments used which patterns and insignia, and how to tell honest wear on real kit from a distressed reproduction trying to look older than it is. That's the kind of knowledge that only comes from handling thousands of real items over decades, not from a product description.

Decades of change, same stock in trade
Nearly fifty years of trading means we've been buying and selling genuine surplus through a lot of change on the military side too — watching combat kit move through generations of camouflage pattern, dress uniform get updated and reissued, and insignia change with each new reign, while the underlying job of sourcing and honestly describing genuine ex-issue kit has stayed exactly the same. That long a view of the trade is hard to build any other way than by simply doing it for a very long time.
From market stall to online store
The trading didn't stop when the internet arrived — it just moved. We took that same stock and know-how onto eBay in 2006, trading there for years before building out our own online store, and the habits from the stall days came with us: describe things honestly, know what you're actually selling, and treat every buyer the way you'd want to be treated across a market table. A screen replaced the stall, but the job underneath it didn't really change.
Over 150,000 buyers, one item at a time
Since taking that trading history online, we've sold to more than 150,000 buyers, one genuine, honestly-described item at a time. No two are exactly the same, because no two pieces of ex-issue kit are exactly the same, and that's the whole point. Every one of those sales started the same way the stall trade always did — someone looking for a specific, genuine item, and someone on the other end who actually knew what they were looking at.
Still genuine, still honest
The same principles that built that track record still apply today: genuine issue clearly marked as genuine, reproduction clearly marked as reproduction, honest descriptions, and real knowledge behind every listing — not just product photos and copy-pasted specs. Nearly fifty years on, that's still the whole business model: know the kit, describe it honestly, and let people buy with confidence. If a listing isn't clear, or you want a second opinion on exactly what something is before you buy, that's still a real person on the other end of the email — the same as it always was across the stall.

What that actually means for what you can buy
Decades in the trade shows up as range rather than as a story. At the time of writing the shelves hold well over ten thousand different items, and the depth in some categories is the part that surprises people:
- Berets in every issued colour, in numbers.
- Badges and insignia running to thousands of different designs — cap badges, collar badges, shoulder titles, rank slides, qualification and trade badges.
- Buttons by regiment, by size and by finish, which is the sort of thing only a long-established stockholder ends up with.
- Dress uniform, including the items that rarely reach the market at all.
- Webbing, bags and field equipment across several generations of British kit.
Why the odd items matter
Anyone can stock combat trousers. What takes decades to accumulate is the long tail: the single collar badge for a regiment that stopped existing in the 1950s, the correct button for a tunic somebody is restoring, the qualification patch nobody else has bothered to keep.
That is the part of a surplus business that cannot be bought in, and it is usually why people come back.
